I've got a couple of degrees in this stuff, so I might as well shoot my mouth off, eh?
Here’s my opinion of the moment: the Bush Administration is a lot more worried about Howard Dean that they want folks to believe. How do I know this? Because of Karl Rove.
Remember a few months back, when Rove made a show of "support" for the Deanites at a public function? How he made it clear that he wanted Dean to get the nomination?
Well, Rove may be evil, but he's never struck me as stupid. I just can't see him showing his hand like that. Why tell folks on the other side of the aisle that you want a guy to win the nomination?
Because, naturally, you don't want him to win the nomination.
Rove was aiming for two targets for his little performance: Democrats and swing moderates. And what he was firing was a meme salvo of "Dean is too liberal to win."
Rove wants the Democrats to worry about putting the "liberal" Dean on the ballot, and the swing moderates to worry about putting him in the White House. He has to resort to this kind of trick because, frankly, an actual examination of Dean's record shows him to be far less liberal than you might think. Check his stance on gun control recently?
Now, who would the Administration want to get the Democratic nod? How about Joe Lieberman, the candidate who epitomizes the "we do everything the Republicans do, only later that day" politicking that got the Democratic Party demolished in 2002? Joey L.'s out there every day positioning himself as a mini-Bush, and begging the Democrats to shoot themselves in the foot. Again.
I bet Karl’s just drooling with anticipation.
Now, I'll be honest. I haven't thrown my support behind Doc Dean, yet. But it seems clear that the current Administration is more worried about him than they're letting on.

Date: 2003-08-27 02:55 pm (UTC)I'm not sure what's worse - that the conservatives have been steering this country towards a plutocracy since the '50s, or that the liberals have been letting them.
